Good practices for forest fire prevention and self-protection: the guide of the five Regional Natural Parks in Lecce
The initiative aims to spread the culture of prevention and management of forest fire risk among landowners and tourism operators

On 10 August a press conference to present " Buone pratiche di prevenzione e autoprotezione dagli incendi boschivi e di vegetazione di interfaccia" ("Good practices of prevention and self-protection from forest fires and interface vegetation") was held in Lecce. The guide was produced by the five Regional Natural Parks: Costa Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase, Isola di Sant'Andrea-Litorale Punta Pizzo, Portoselvaggio-Palude del Capitano, Bosco e Paludi di Rauccio, Palude del Conte and Duna Costiera Porto Cesareo, Litorale di Ugento. Designed as a tool for knowledge, prevention and management of fire risk, the brochure is mainly addressed to citizens owning land, houses or holiday villages located in areas close to vegetation.
The guide, downloadable on the institutional website of the Province of Lecce and the websites of the parks involved in the initiative, illustrates the phenomenon of interface fires from multiple points of view: the causes that can trigger possible dangerous situations, the risk classification of buildings in relation to their position, and the sharing of valuable information on what to know and what to do before, during and after the fire to protect the people and the surrounding environment.
This document is a precious support for the training and awareness-raising of residents on the risk involving the area in which they live and on the conscious and responsible choices and the beaviour to be adopted to fight fires. The active involvement of the population, in fact, plays a key role in the protection of the green heritage and helps to strengthen the work carried out every day by the local Civil Protection System operators in coordination with the Regional Civil Protection.
